[Still Life: bamboo strips, hatchet and glass]

Still Life: bamboo strips, hatchet and glass
Surin, Thailand, 8/8/2000
(c) 2000, Andrew Sigal

I didn’t set up this still life. The photo is just as I found the tableau. A young man named Ti had just finished making strips of bamboo with which to tie up bundles of young rice plants, ready to transport to a paddy for transplanting. The hatchet was used for everything from husking and opening coconuts to chopping down bamboo branches, to peeling off these bamboo strips. I had a try at making bamboo strips, but failed utterly. All my strips were either too thin or too thick. Another skill to be mastered.
