Tip #5: Use ATMs in foreign countries

Before you travel, make sure that your bank's ATM card will work in the country where you are traveling. Credit cards will usually charge a foreign currency conversion fee (usually 1% to 4%), and there are fees on travelers checks too. Foreign exchange booths often offer terrible rates and charge exchange fees. Using ATMs you can often get local currency with no exchange fee and at the "interbank exchange rate", which is the best rate available outside of the black market. Check with your bank to see what their foreign currency policies are, and make sure your ATM card wont expire while you are traveling (this has happened to me.)
